Good morning fellow developers,
For a while i am struggeling with providing sound to my users on IOS (Safari on Mac is no problem and every other device is not a problem) (we have an existing phone system and made a chat as well), the case is very simple: the notification sound is only for users who are logged in and online for chat.
i have tried multiple things:
Audio play with javascript (start with mute, play when user clicks a button so the sound is familiar, play when user clicks a button and directly pause it and continue when needed)
PWA: the dashboard has been made available as pwa and notifications using google firebase. The popup does show for notifcations to be allowed (and receiving the notifications does work on any other device) But any IOS device cannot register.
The information i find is that notifications were supported with 16.4 or higher but also have been deprecated around IOS 17, auto play is not allowed.
We have an app in development for our product as well were we will have a notification which will handle this, but that is not the solution we can use now.
Long story, short question: is it still somehow possible to push a notification to the user when using the PWA or play a sound in the browser (based on an ajax function). The app/website wont be in the background, so it will always be on the screen.
Languages we use: html/javascript (mostly vanilla)/php

Actually this is a duplicate for https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/106537 but in web-specific forums section.
Is there any video/audio codec best practices, guides, recommendations for app/web developers for best performance (take advantage from HW acceleration), power consumption saving? What are officially supported media containers? What are video encoding profiles, video dimensions, frame rates?
The only official source I have found is https://developer.apple.com/documentation/webkit/delivering-video-content-for-safari?language=objc. But h264 is pretty old. I experimentally found that the VP9 video format is also supported on iOS newer versions. But is this a requirement? Сan i be sure that the video will play on all devices?
My goal is to provide web media content (which will be rendered in my application using WKWebView API) that will be supported by most devices (both iOS and MacOS), takes advantage of such features as hardware decode acceleration and be efficient.
Any hints/info is highly appreciated. Best regards.
Hi i Need help, my phone keeps getting all these updates and rapid security features on it at first I thought it was just the normal updates but i started to pay more attention and it's not. i have the beta updates on my phone iPad and Apple Watch but when I go in to see if it in my updates like apple said to do it wasn't in there. Also all my apps are developer apps I'm not able to get normal ones and if I can the next time I go on it it's not how it was. I really don't know what to do, I've gotten 2 new phones because I thought it was just bad software but I researched a lot and I think someone it hacking me. everytime I look something up on safari it takes me to a whole other website or its completly altered and doesnt look like it usually does. Is there a way to read all URLs of the currently open Safari TabGroup from a Safari Extension? In macOS and iOS
So I have web Augmented Reality apps hosted on AWS S3. It worked fine for a month, but as soon as the IOS 18.4 update was installed they stopped working. It works on every other device and IOS versions.
The URLs for the mentioned AR experiences:
digitechonline.in/solsprefimaginewt8/
digitechonline.in/solsprefimaginewt8p2/
digitechonline.in/orocarear/
These AR experiences get stuck on the loading screen and either reload or give an error. Ideally the camera is supposed to open.
I have tested it on Safari, Microsoft Edge and Google Chrome browsers.
They were created through Unity webgl and hosted on AWS S3 bucket. Please provide a quick solution to this.

I'm having issues with opening up role="link". links in wkwebview. Is there a way in my decideforpolicy to allow these links to open up in the current webview vs another window like a traditional web browser does? Thank you ahead of time.
After updating to iOS 18.4, our web application (with service workers) crashes on devices that accessed it prior to the update. This issue also affects hybrid mobile apps using the same web application; reinstalling the app resolves it by refetching and reinstalling service workers. Debugging is challenging because clearing the cache or reinstalling the app fixes the problem, and no useful error logs are available. Has anyone encountered similar crashes related to service workers after an iOS update and have any insights into the cause?
I'm trying to use ES6 module imports in a Safari Web Extension, but despite enabling "type": "module" in the manifest, imports are not functioning as expected.
Specifically when working with a project structure that includes multiple directories.
A root directory containing the manifest.json and main entry point scripts
A scripts/ folder housing core functionality modules
A common/ directory for shared utilities, constants, and helper functions
A background.js file in the root that attempts to import from these various directories
When trying to import modules from the scripts/ and common/ directories into my background.js, I'm encountering complete import failures.
How can I correctly implement cross-directory module imports in Safari Web Extensions?
Hi,
when I display an HTML page with a on Safari iOS, I get a nice UI. Great! At the first look I see a video frame with an arrow-in-a-circle button in the middle. Very nice. I click on the arrow and I get a fullscreen view while the video begins to play. I watch the video then I pause it then I click on the top-left x button. So I go back to my html page and the video is perfectly there as it was before.
But, there is an annoying new detail. The video frame is really dark, it still presents all the controls and a "different" arrow button to play it again. In other words that nice video-frame, that nice picture, is not longer visible on the page. That nice page with nice pictures has now an almost-black rectangle. Too bad.
Sure I can click on the video (outside the controls) then the controls and the black overlaying frame disappear. I can see that nice picture again. Finally. Well, but the arrow-in-a-circle button to play the video disappeared. Now the user cannot longer understand that's a video to play. It looks just like any other pictures to admire statically.
Is any way to get the previous first look of the video? The one clear, with the current frame and the arrow-in-a-circle look?
Hello, following problems described here:
https://developer.apple.com/forums/thread/765272
Last version of Safari apparently corrected previous bugs, however we encountered another problem. Right now Safari uses autocomplete feature of some kind (Siri suggested websites/Top hit) which triggers blocking while writing the name of the website. Probably somehow loads website in the background. Problem is, that this behavior is impossible to debug, because this autocomplete doesn't work, while the browser console is open. We are using content script for blocking.
Please advise.
Thanks very much

Dears,
We are facing some issue in ios 18.4.1. Recently some of our end users who updated their ios devices to 18.4.1 have experienced random 403 errors in runtime. as per our analysis, We identified that these errors are associated with "CSRF token mismatch".
After successful login, the user's CSRF token is causing issue and it was changed in runtime, this causes the cookie mismatch, and the users is getting 403 errors, and the user session is getting invalid suddenly.
let me know if anyone facing the same issue in ios 18.4.1 and let me know Is there any workaround for this issue.
Thanks.
Hello!
I am looking to use SF Pro as the main font of my website. This website is used as a place of purchase for some of my products, none of which will actually be using this font.
The websites logo will also not be using this font, however I am worried that may be legally unviable.
Please let me know if this is an option. I'm not looking to get direct financial gain by using your fonts, just would like to use it for the website.
Thank you for your help.
Hello,
When I view my website (lasaluade) on iphone or ipad the top of my page bodies are cut off (3-4 first lines). However, on PC, Mac or Android everything is OK (see screenshots).
For the record, I built this site with Wordpress and Divi Builder, and I've the same result on Safari and Chrome.
Not being a developer, I don't know where to look (I just think it's iOS-related).
Have you already had this problem? Do you have any ideas?
Thanks for your help!

Since Safari requires a macOS app as a container for Web Extensions, is there a way to establish native messaging directly from SafariWebExtensionHandler using stdin/stdout? Or does Safari enforce a different communication mechanism?
I’d like to keep the same approach as other browsers.
Any guidance on making this work would be appreciated!
I want to migrate from a Safari App Extension to a Safari Web Extension, but don't know how to get rid of the message, telling users that my extension can access their passwords. Here is a message which I see:
I was thinking that this might be because all Safari Web Extension get this type of access, but I have a Safari Web Extension which does not require such level of access:
Here is the manifest:

We have a Web Extension that uses firebase for auth. It was working fine until the latest version of Safari 18.3 got released few days ago on January 27, 2025.
All of out extension versions stopped working on it; even the ones that are published on App Store. It uses FirebaseJS v9.23.0.
Same version of the extension are working fine on other browsers. We use onAuthStateChanged to listen to auth related events; but it is never fired now.
Hello,
I was going through the Apple Pay API documentation and noticed ambiguity on the exact process to complete merchant validation.
One of the documentation mentions that the validation url will be
Your server posts a request using mutual TLS (mTLS) by calling the Apple Pay server’s Payment Session endpoint.
Endpoint (Global)
POST https://apple-pay-gateway.apple.com/paymentservices/paymentSession
Endpoint (China region)
POST https://cn-apple-pay-gateway.apple.com/paymentservices/paymentSession
Referencing the url: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/apple_pay_on_the_web/apple_pay_js_api/requesting_an_apple_pay_payment_session
whereas the other references that the value should be used as provided by the onvalidatemerchant event object with the property validationURL.
Refer: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/apple_pay_on_the_web/apple_pay_js_api/providing_merchant_validation
Can someone confirm which is the correct approach to follow ?
Upon upgrading to 18.3 safari now says no connection
cleared cookies and data. Disabled all extensions and all von and security

Hello,
I am developing a Mac application via Mac Catalyst and encountering an issue with WKWebView. Specifically, I'm loading a webpage (e.g., https://translate.google.com) in WKWebView, but when I press the copy button on the page, the content doesn't actually copy to the clipboard.
I've attempted modifying the UserAgent without any success. Here is the relevant part of my code:
override func viewDidLoad() {
super.viewDidLoad()
let config = WKWebViewConfiguration()
config.preferences = WKPreferences()
config.defaultWebpagePreferences.preferredContentMode = .desktop
let webView = WKWebView(frame: .zero, configuration: config)
webView.translatesAutoresizingMaskIntoConstraints = false
view.addSubview(webView)
webView.scrollView.showsVerticalScrollIndicator = false
webView.backgroundColor = UIColor.white
webView.scrollView.backgroundColor = UIColor.white
webView.leadingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.leadingAnchor).isActive = true
webView.topAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.topAnchor).isActive = true
webView.trailingAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.trailingAnchor).isActive = true
webView.bottomAnchor.constraint(equalTo: view.bottomAnchor).isActive = true
if let url = URL(string: "https://translate.google.com") {
let req = URLRequest(url: url)
webView.load(req)
}
}
