Validate drag operations with Transferable
Let's say I want to build a simple photo management app on Mac or iPad with Swift UI. This app has multi-window support. My photos are organized inside albums. I should be able to drag photos between windows from one album to another. I struggle to get this working properly with Swift UI. Writing modern code I would like to use Transferable. Let's say my photos are not real files. So I can't use a FileRepresentation. Instead I use CodableRepresentation and encode an identifier. This identifier is later used to drive the move operation between folders. I ran into some limitations here Transferable seems to be meant for copy-like Drag & Drop operations. I have no possible to get a "move" cursor on macOS (it's always the copy cursor with the green + sign). Also the API reads like it is about importing/exporting – not moving. When using dropDestination on ForEach, I completely lack the possibility to deny a drop (e.g. when a photo is already part of the album). I'd like to have modifier key to switch between copying and moving. Sometimes a drop should be redirected to a different index. How to do that? Is there any chance to do this with Transferable? It even doesn't seem to be easy with NSItemProvider and onDrop/onDrag? Or should we still use a plain old UICollectionView/NSCollectionView, if we want to have more sophisticated control over drag/drop validation?

Context menu previews are ignoring the parent's scaleEffect() modifier
If you add the .scaleEffect() modifier to a parent view inside of which there are children with contextMenu()-s, the context menu preview unfortunately keeps the original, unscaled size of the child view. This results in a very weird, glitchy user experience. Unfortunately, providing a custom preview that is scaled up also does not help, since even though it is the right size, it gets cropped to the unscaled size of the child view. Adding scaleEffect() to each child element individually (BEFORE the contextMenu() modifier!) does make the problem disappear. However, I would like to avoid this, since my use case is zooming into a complex graph with context menus on its nodes, and having to recalculate the position of each node manually seems to perform much worse than delegating that work to scaleEffect(). Tested on iOS 18.2 (device + emulator) Is there a workaround? Here is a minimal working example that demonstrates the problem: struct ContentView: View { var body: some View { VStack(spacing: 20) { Rectangle() .frame(width: 100, height: 100) .contextMenu { Button("Test") {} Button("Test") {} } Rectangle() .frame(width: 100, height: 100) .contextMenu { Button("Test") {} Button("Test") {} } } .scaleEffect(1.5) } } Screenshot (problem: The two squares are the same size. However, the long-tapped upper square got shrunk down before the context menu got displayed.)

Popover in full-screen apps doesn't keep menu bar open
I have an app that acts as an agent (no dock/app, just menu bar icon). When the icon is clicked, I show a popover with a small user interface. This works great, however, there is an issue. When a certain app is in full-screen and then my menu bar icon is clicked, the user interface shows just fine, until the mouse is moved outside the menu bar - then the user interface stays but the menu bar dismisses and closes. Is there a way to keep the menu bar open, like when clicking on Control Center, in full-screen apps? This is how I open my popover: if let button = statusItem.button { if popover.isShown { self.popover.performClose(sender) } else { popover.show(relativeTo: button.bounds, of: button, preferredEdge: .minY) popover.contentViewController?.view.window?.makeKey() } } }

Custom app icon on macOS
I would like to provide a way to choose an app icon as a reward for using the referral feature of the app. I found that setting the image via NSApp.applicationIconImage works, but only when the app is running, and the app icon is reset on the next launch. I also found NSDockTile plugin APIs, and that seems to be the way, but it won't be allowed on the Mac App Store. Is there really no way to do it legit way and pass the Mac App Store review? Seems to be another really strange limitation imposed.

tvOS: Search Keyboard Unresponsive After Dismissing Custom Controller with Embedded TVDigitEntryViewController
Description I'm developing a tvOS application where I utilize a UISearchController embedded within a UISearchContainerViewController for search functionality. In a particular flow, a custom view controller contains a TVDigitEntryViewController as a child, with its modalPresentationStyle set to .blurOverFullScreen. The issue arises when a user initiates the PIN entry but decides to cancel and return to the search interface without entering a PIN. Upon returning, the search keyboard is no longer visible, and attempts to focus or interact with it are unsuccessful. Steps to Reproduce Initialize and present a UISearchContainerViewController that contains a UISearchController with a results view controller. Within the search results, present a custom view controller containing TVDigitEntryViewController as a child, setting its modalPresentationStyle to .blurOverFullScreen. Dismiss the custom view controller without entering a PIN (e.g., by pressing the Menu button on the remote). Observe that upon returning to the search interface, the keyboard is missing, and focus interactions are unresponsive. Observed Behavior After dismissing the custom view controller with TVDigitEntryViewController, the search keyboard does not reappear, and the focus system seems to lose track of the search input field. Expected Behavior The search keyboard should remain visible and functional after dismissing the custom view controller, allowing users to continue their search without interruption. Additional Context I have reviewed the TVDigitEntryViewController documentation (developer.apple.com) and related discussions on the Apple Developer Forums but have not found a solution to this specific issue. Questions Has anyone encountered a similar issue or have insights into why the search keyboard becomes unresponsive after dismissing a .blurOverFullScreen modal with a child TVDigitEntryViewController? Are there recommended practices to ensure the search keyboard remains active and focusable after such modal presentations? Any guidance or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Apple Maps annotations and markers
In Apple's Maps app, an annotation is made up of a circle shape or rounded rectangles with a glyph-image. When selecting an annotation, the annotation animates into a balloon marker (see attached GIF). How does Apple Maps solve this - from custom annotation to balloon marker with spring animation? I switched my Maps implementation from SwiftUI to UIKit with a UIViewRepresentable to support annotation clustering - and it works beautifully. But how to subclass an MKAnnotationView (or MKMarkerAnnotationView <- the balloon) to enable selection and animation as in Apple Maps? MKMarkerAnnotationView only show balloon markers and I tried everything inside MKAnnotationView (CALayer, etc.)

Screen capture notification in MacOs catalyst
We have a IOS app and we are using the same app for Mac Catalyst. In IOS we are able to detect when user take the screenshot using UIApplicationUserDidTakeScreenshotNotification. But in MACCatalyst it is not working. As per docs UIApplicationUserDidTakeScreenshotNotification and UIScreenCapturedDidChangeNotification are both supported for MacCatalyst 13.1+. But I am not getting screen shot notifications using both

Unable to display SwiftUI View Previews in a Static Framework target
Hello, I am currently encountering an issue where SwiftUI View Previews cannot be displayed when the View is defined in a Static Framework target. This issue only occurs under specific conditions. Environment Xcode: 16.2 Scheme Structure: MainApp Test Target: TestHogeFeature Test Setting: Gather coverage (Code coverage collection) enabled(all) Target Structure: MainApp (Application target) Dependencies: [HogeFeature, Core] HogeFeature (Static Framework target) Dependencies: [Core] Core (Framework target) Dependencies: None TestHogeFeature (Unit test target) Dependencies: [HogeFeature] Summary I am currently working on a SwiftUI-based project and have encountered an issue where Previews fail to display under specific conditions. Below are the details: Issue In the MainApp scheme, when the code coverage collection setting (Gather coverage for) is enabled, Previews for SwiftUI Views within the HogeFeature (Static Framework) target fail to display correctly. However, the issue is resolved by taking one of the following actions: Change HogeFeature from a Static Framework to a Dynamic Framework. Remove the build setting MACH_O_TYPE: staticlib Disable the Gather coverage setting in the MainApp scheme. I have attached the actual error log from the failed Preview. preview error log Questions Why does this issue occur only when using a Static Framework with code coverage enabled? Is there any way to resolve this issue while maintaining the current configuration (Static Framework with code coverage enabled)? I would appreciate any advice or insights regarding the cause and potential solutions.

ishidden not working
I set the isHidden property of a view in traitCollectionDidChange and found that sometime it does not take effect after being set(value of isHidden actually not changed either). It looks like the setting does not take effect when triggered an even number of times, but it is normal when triggered an odd number of times. When setting isHidden, what actually goes into is [UIView (Rendering) setHidden:], which internally calls [UIView _ bitFlagValueAfterIncrementingHiddenManagement CountForKey: withIncrement: bitFlagValue:] to handle the relevant logic of "_UIViewPendingHiddenCount". Is this issue related to this part of the processing? returning 0 after calling seems normal This view is a UIStackView, and it is uncertain whether it is related to the type of view

Unexpected Frame Resizing Behavior During Animation of safeAreaInset content.
Hey everyone! I’m encountering an issue while attempting to animate height changes of the content inside safeAreaInset(edge:alignment:spacing:content:). When animating a reduction in the frame height, the container view (in my case, Map) also animates unexpectedly. However, when animating an increase in the frame height, the animation works smoothly, and the Map view remains still. How can I address this odd resizing behavior of the container? Code: struct MapView: View { var body: some View { Map() .safeAreaInset(edge: .bottom) { MapDetailView() } } } struct MapDetailView: View { @State private var oldHeightOffset: CGFloat = 0 @State private var newHeightOffset: CGFloat = 0 @State private var containerHeight: CGFloat = 0 private var drag: some Gesture { DragGesture(coordinateSpace: .global) .onChanged { value in withAnimation(.interactiveSpring) { newHeightOffset = oldHeightOffset + value.translation.height } } .onEnded { value in switch newHeightOffset { case containerHeight * 0.625...containerHeight: withAnimation(.spring) { newHeightOffset = containerHeight * 0.75 } case containerHeight * 0.25..<containerHeight * 0.625: withAnimation(.spring) { newHeightOffset = containerHeight * 0.5 } case 0..<containerHeight * 0.25: withAnimation(.spring) { newHeightOffset = 0 } default: break } oldHeightOffset = newHeightOffset } } var body: some View { NavigationStack { Rectangle() .fill(.clear) .containerBackground(.ultraThinMaterial, for: .navigation) } .gesture(drag) .containerRelativeFrame(.vertical) { length, _ in length - newHeightOffset } .onGeometryChange(for: CGFloat.self) { geometryProxy in let frame = geometryProxy.frame(in: .local) return frame.height + newHeightOffset } action: { containerHeight in self.containerHeight = containerHeight } } } Reducing safe area inset's content height (drag down): Increasing safe area inset's content height (drag up):

Extending iOS screen to an external display
I understand two key concepts from desktop platforms: Screen Mirroring – The same content is displayed on both the primary and external screens. Screen Extension – The external display shows different content that complements what's on the main screen. My question pertains to the second point: Is it possible to extend the display on iOS and iPadOS devices? I'm referring to this Apple documentation, which explains how to extend content from an iOS/iPadOS device to an external display. I tested this in a sample iOS Xcode project. In the iOS Simulator, I was able to detect an "external display" and present a separate UIWindow on it. However, when I tried the same on a real device (iPhone 15 connected to a MacBook Pro via cable), the external display connection was not detected. I’d like to confirm whether screen extension is possible on a real iOS device. From my research, it appears that extension is only supported on iPadOS via Stage Manager, but I want to verify if there’s any way to achieve this on an iPhone. If so, are there any known apps that currently utilize extended display functionality on iOS? If extension is not possible on iOS, what does the documentation mentions iOS?

Multi Section Sidebar using List with selections for macOS
I'm trying to implement a 3 column NavigationSplitView in SwiftUI on macOS - very similar to Apple's own NavigationCookbook sample app - with the slight addition of multiple sections in the sidebar similar to how the Apple Music App has multiple sections in the sidebar. Note: This was easily possible using the deprecated NavigationLink(tag, selection, destination) API The most obvious approach is to simply do something like: NavigationSplitView(sidebar: { List { Section("Section1") { List(section1, selection: $selectedItem1) { item in NavigationLink(item.label, value: item) } } Section("Section2") { List(section2, selection: $selectedItem2) { item in NavigationLink(item.label, value: item) } } } }, content: { Text("Content View") }, detail: { Text("Detail View") }) But unfortunately, this doesn't work - it doesn't seem to properly iterate over all of the items in each List(data, selection: $selected) or the view is strangely cropped - it only shows 1 item. However if the 1 item is selected, then the appropriate bindable selection value is updated. See image below: If you instead use ForEach for enumerating the data, that does seem to work, however when you use ForEach, you loose the ability to track the selection offered by the List API, as there is no longer a bindable selection propery in the NavigationLink API. NavigationSplitView(sidebar: { List { Section("Section1") { ForEach(section1) { item in NavigationLink(item.label, value: item) } } Section("Section2") { ForEach(section2) { item in NavigationLink(item.label, value: item) } } } }, content: { Text("Content View") }, detail: { Text("Detail View") }) We no longer know when a sidebar selection has occurred. See image below: Obviously Apple is not going to comment on the expected lifespan of the now deprecated API - but I am having a hard time switching to the new NavigationLink with a broken sidebar implementation.

swiftui fileimporter inside UIHostingController
I'm working on an old iOS app that started with objective-C + UIKit and has being migrated to Swift + SwiftUI. Currently its code is mostly Swift + SwiftUI but it has still some objective-C and some UIKit ViewControllers. One of the SwiftUI views uses fileImporter to open Files App and select a file from the device. This has been working well until iOS 18 is launched. With iOS 18 the file picker is not launching correctly and is frozen in every simulator (the unique real device I've could test with iOS 18 seemed to work correctly). I managed to clone my project and leave it with the minimal amount of files to reproduce this error. This is the code: AppDelegate.h #import <UIKit/UIKit.h> @interface AppDelegate : UIResponder <UIApplicationDelegate> {} @property (strong, nonatomic) UIWindow *window; @end AppDelegate.m #import "AppDelegate.h" #import "MyApp-Swift.h" @interface AppDelegate () @end @implementation AppDelegate - (BOOL)application:(UIApplication *)application didFinishLaunchingWithOptions:(NSDictionary *)launchOptions { self.window = [[UIWindow alloc] initWithFrame:[[UIScreen mainScreen] bounds]]; self.window.backgroundColor = [UIColor whiteColor]; [self.window makeKeyAndVisible]; FirstViewBuilder *viewBuilder = [[FirstViewBuilder alloc] init]; [viewBuilder show]; return YES; } @end FirstViewBuilder.swift import SwiftUI @objc class FirstViewBuilder: NSObject { private var view: UIHostingController<FirstView> @objc override init() { self.view = MyHostingController(rootView: FirstView()) } @objc func show() { let app = UIApplication.shared.delegate as? AppDelegate let window = app?.window window?.backgroundColor = .white // Use navigationController or view directly depending on use window?.rootViewController = view } } FirstView.swift import SwiftUI struct FirstView: View { @State var hasToOpenFilesApp = false var body: some View { VStack(alignment: .leading, spacing: 0) { Button("Open Files app") { hasToOpenFilesApp = true }.fileImporter(isPresented: $hasToOpenFilesApp, allowedContentTypes: [.text]) { result in switch result { case .success(let url): print(url.debugDescription) case .failure(let error): print(error.localizedDescription) } } } } } And finally, MyHostingController import SwiftUI class MyHostingController<Content>: UIHostingController<Content> where Content: View { override init(rootView: Content) { super.init(rootView: rootView) } @objc required dynamic init?(coder aDecoder: NSCoder) { fatalError("init(coder:) has not been implemented") } override func viewDidLoad() { super.viewDidLoad() navigationItem.hidesBackButton = true } } Launching this in an iPhone 13 Pro (18.2) simulator I click on Open Files App, it takes 2 seconds to open it, and it opens full screen (not like a modal). Buttons on the top are behind the status bar and buttons at the bottom are behind the Home indicator. But it's worse because the user can't interact with this view, it's frozen. I created a fresh SwiftUI project just with this unique view and the fileimport worked as expected so I thought the problem was due to embed the SwiftUI view inside the UIHostingController. So I made these modifications to the minimal project: Remove the files AppDelegate, FirstViewBuilder and MyHostingController. Create this SwiftUI App file import SwiftUI @main struct MyApp: App { var body: some Scene { WindowGroup { FirstView() } } } And again the same problem with iOS 18. But if I launch this exact project in an iPhone 13 Pro (17.4) simulator and open the files apps (now it opens almost instantly) it works OK and shows the file picker as a modal, as expected, and I can interact with it and select files. Last thing I've tried is removing LaunchScreen.xib from my project and Launch screen interface file base name key from my info.plist but the problem keeps happening. I guess it must be due to my project configuration (too old) but I have no more ideas of where to look at. The possibility of having a fresh SwiftUI project and "move" the old project to the new one could take me several weeks and I discard it by the moment. Could I use another method to select files from SwiftUI views with iOS 18?

iOS Widget can't connect to the host app and shows Skeleton.
Some of our users keep reporting that occasionally some widgets (which initially were working perfectly) are now broken and show only skeletons. Note that the app has multiple widgets, and this happens only to some of them (that is when some widgets get broken, some other widgets are still working normally). While developing the app, I came across this symptom as well, and when I read the device console, I found the following errors in the console (which the system was repeatedly reporting to the console): Unable to get connection interface: Error Domain=LNConnectionErrorDomain Code=1100 "Unable to locate com.example.app.MyAppntents for the com.apple.intents-service extension point" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=Unable to locate com.example.app.MyAppIntents for the com.apple.intents-service extension point} The affected widgets use the 'UserDefaults with groups' to read the data that is stored by the host app. And I think that sometimes the widget fails (or even crashes) while reading the data from the UserDefaults and it ends up showing the skeleton. The only remedy I found was Uninstall the app Reboot the device Install the app again. After this, the widget starts to work again.. So, what can be the reason behind this? Is this an iOS bug or what and how to fight it?

iPadOS 18 App (on Apple Silicon) - Duplicate Tab Bar Appearing in Toolbar
With iPadOS 18, the UITabBar now defaults to the floating style. I successfully reverted the tab bar to its traditional style by overriding the UITabBarController's horizontalSizeClass property: self.tabBarController?.traitOverrides.horizontalSizeClass = .unspecified When I launch the app on my Mac using Apple Silicon, TWO tab bars appear: One appears at the bottom of the screen, like a traditional tab bar. The second tab bar is still embedded in the app toolbar in its floating style. Is this a bug? How do you ensure that overriding the horizontalSizeClass will remove/hide the floating tab bar when running an app on Apple Silicon? TIA! (Demonstrated on a test project)

Looking for sample code 3d wireframe (with lines ) & polygons and should be able to rotate (set camera angles) I tried sample code seems to be complicated & getting a BLANK screen import SwiftUI import SceneKit struct SceneKitTest2: View { var body: some View { VStack{ Text("SceneKitTest2") SceneView(scene: SCNScene(named:"Earth_1_12756.scn"), options: [.autoenablesDefaultLighting,.allowsCameraControl]) .frame(width:UIScreen.main.bounds.width, height: UIScreen.main.bounds.height/2) Spacer(minLength: 0) } } }
