Virtual Camera Shows Jittering Frames and Solid Accent Color on macOS
Hello Apple Developer Support, I’m developing a virtual camera using the CMIOExtensionDevice / CMIOExtensionStreamSource APIs on macOS. While the virtual camera appears in system settings and apps like Zoom and Google Meet, the video output exhibits the following issues: Jittering frames: The first frame sometimes appears correctly, but subsequent frames flicker or jitter. Solid color fill: Eventually, the camera feed fills entirely with a solid accent color (e.g., blue), rather than the intended video content. Console logs: Repeated messages appear in Console.app: Invalid display 0x00000000 Setup details: The virtual camera is created using CMIOExtensionDevice and CMIOExtensionStream. Video frames are rendered from NSImage/CGImage using CGContext and copied into CVPixelBuffers. Frame delivery is controlled by a DispatchSourceTimer at 60 FPS. macOS version: [Your macOS version here] Xcode version: [Your Xcode version here] Observations: The Invalid display 0x00000000 logs suggest that CGContext drawing or NSImage operations are failing in headless mode (i.e., there is no real display attached to the virtual camera). Using CIContext with .useSoftwareRenderer = true appears to mitigate some flicker, but not entirely. Questions / Requests: Is it expected that CoreMediaIO virtual cameras cannot reliably render CGImage / NSImage frames offscreen? Are there recommended APIs or approaches to render virtual camera frames fully headless to avoid display-dependent jitter? Is there any documentation or sample code from Apple showing stable video output from a virtual camera extension that does not rely on a physical display? Any guidance or examples would be greatly appreciated. This issue prevents the virtual camera from being used reliably in standard video apps. Thank you, Savvy

Implementing PHBackgroundResourceUploadExtension
Hi, I am trying to implement a PHBackgroundResourceUploadExtension to upload backup media files to an external cloud service based on these docs: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/PhotoKit/uploading-asset-resources-in-the-background#Acknowledge-completed-jobs Creating jobs and actual uploading is working as expected, but the problem I have is in the acknowledgeCompletedJobs() function. When in this function, I am trying to access a job's resource. The resource is nil and thus has empty assetLocalIdentifier and originalFilename. Did anybody successfully implement this extension or knows, why this would happen? Because the resource of an acknowledgable job is empty, I can not match it back to my processed assets.

PHAssetResourceUploadJobChangeRequest doesn't upload iCloud-optimized photos — is this expected?
I'm implementing PHBackgroundResourceUploadExtension to back up photos and videos to our cloud storage service. During testing, I observed that iCloud-optimized photos (where the full-resolution original is stored in iCloud, not on device) do not upload. The upload job appears to silently skip these assets. Questions: Is this behavior intentional/documented? I couldn't find explicit mention of this limitation. If the device only has the optimized/thumbnail version locally, does the system: - Automatically download the full-resolution asset from iCloud before uploading? - Skip the asset entirely? - Return an error via PHAssetResourceUploadJobChangeRequest? For a complete backup solution, should we: - Pre-fetch full-resolution assets using PHAssetResourceManager.requestData(for:options:) before creating upload jobs? - Use a hybrid approach (this extension for local assets + separate logic for iCloud-only assets)? Environment: iOS 26, Xcode 18

macOS 26.4 regression with Mac Catalyst apps using PhotoKit: Photos do not appear when using limited access - Failed to get sandbox extension for url - Image request failed with error PHPhotosErrorDomain Code 3303

Is 18MP Front Camera Capture Available to Third-Party Apps via AVFoundation?
Hi, I'm investigating whether 18MP photo capture from the front camera on iPhone 17 Pro is available to third-party apps using AVFoundation. I first inspected all available AVCaptureDevice formats, but I could not find any format corresponding to ~18MP resolution (e.g., around 4896×3672). for format in device.formats { let desc = format.formatDescription let dims = CMVideoFormatDescriptionGetDimensions(desc) print("Format: (dims.width) x (dims.height)") } All reported formats appear to be limited to resolutions such as 4032×3024 (12MP) or below. Question: Is 18MP front camera capture actually available to third-party apps via AVFoundation on iPhone 17?

AVCaptureVideoPreviewLayer layoutSublayers invoked on background thread
Opening this question after discussing the issue in the AVCapture lab, hopefully so we can track down this issue. We've been noticing some crashes in App Store Connect caused by layoutSublayers being called on a background thread. After debugging the issue a bit we found that all calls which modified the AVCaptureSession or preview layer were indeed done on the main thread. It would be useful to see what results in AVCaptureVideoPreviewLayer.updateFormatDescription being called. I've attached the crashlog below. Does PhotoKit provide access to People, Places, and Shared Albums?
I know how to search for Smart Albums (favorites, selfies, etc...) containing photos: // Get smart albums PHFetchResult *smartAlbums = [PHAssetCollection fetchAssetCollectionsWithType:PHAssetCollectionTypeSmartAlbum subtype:PHAssetCollectionSubtypeAlbumRegular options:nil]; I have the following questions: Is there a way to enumerate the People Smart Albums and access the photos in a specific People Smart Album? Is there a way to enumerate the Places Smart Albums and access the photos in a specific Place Smart Album? Is there a way to enumerate Shared Albums (shared to the current iCloud user) and access the photos in a specific Shared Album?

IPadOS 17 external camera exposure
I'm developing iPad app that will be mostly dedicated for certain external camera for visually impaired people. The linux UVC api (e.g. using guvcview) allows to enable automatic exposure for the camera. IOs api "isExposureModeSupported" unfortunately returns false for any of the exposure modes. Is it a bug? Or perhaps AVFoundation doesn't support UVC exposure yet?

PHLivePhotoEditingContext.saveLivePhoto results in AVFoundation error -11800 "The operation could not be completed" reason An unknown error occurred (-12815)
When trying to edit some Live Photos, calling PHLivePhotoEditingContext.saveLivePhoto results in the following error: Error Domain=AVFoundationErrorDomain Code=-11800 "The operation could not be completed" UserInfo={NSLocalizedFailureReason=An unknown error occurred (-12815), NSLocalizedDescription=The operation could not be completed, NSUnderlyingError=0x300d05380 {Error Domain=NSOSStatusErrorDomain Code=-12815 "(null)"}} I was able to replicate it on my device by taking a new Live Photo. Not sure what's wrong with that one specifically, not all Live Photos replicate the issue. I've submitted FB15880825 with a sysdiagnose and a Photos Diagnostics as well. Any ideas what's going on here? It's impacting multiple customers. Thanks!

Dockkit custom tracking does not work on iOS18.3
Hi all, I'm using Apple Sample Code below to create application using dockkit. "Controlling a DockKit accessory using your camera app" https://developer.apple.com/documentation/dockkit/controlling-a-dockkit-accessory-using-your-camera-app?changes=_8 I used vision hand recognition and put the observation data to dockAccessory.track, but Belkin or Insta360 devices never move on iPhone 16 Pro Max with iOS 18.3. If I use other functions like face search (system tracking) in the app, those work ok. I used Belkin and Insta360 Flow 2 Pro to reproduce the problem. My friend is also saying that the custom tracking feature was working fine on the OS 18 beta, but on recent iOS 18.3 that feature does not work. If I can get the iOS 18.0 beta then we can test that feature. But I cannot revert my iOS from 18.3 to the iOS 18.0 Beta. Regards, TO

Vision Framework VNTrackObjectRequest: Minimum Valid Bounding Box Size Causing Internal Error (Code=9)
I'm developing a tennis ball tracking feature using Vision Framework in Swift, specifically utilizing VNDetectedObjectObservation and VNTrackObjectRequest. Occasionally (but not always), I receive the following runtime error: Failed to perform SequenceRequest: Error Domain=com.apple.Vision Code=9 "Internal error: unexpected tracked object bounding box size" UserInfo={NSLocalizedDescription=Internal error: unexpected tracked object bounding box size} From my investigation, I suspect the issue arises when the bounding box from the initial observation (VNDetectedObjectObservation) is too small. However, Apple's documentation doesn't clearly define the minimum bounding box size that's considered valid by VNTrackObjectRequest. Could someone clarify: What is the minimum acceptable bounding box width and height (normalized) that Vision Framework's VNTrackObjectRequest expects? Is there any recommended practice or official guidance for bounding box size validation before creating a tracking request? This information would be extremely helpful to reliably avoid this internal error. Thank you!

PHFetchOptions: Full List of Supported Predicate Keys
Hi, Could anybody share the full list of supported Predicate keys for the PHFetchOptions? I'm aware of the list that is posted in the documentation: https://developer.apple.com/documentation/photos/phfetchoptions However I have reason to believe that this is not an exhaustive list and there also seem to be mistakes in this doc. i.e. isFavorite does not work but favorite does. Through some experimentation I also found that this works: NSPredicate(format: "adjustmentFormatIdentifier == 'com.pixelmatorteam.touch.x.photo.PhotosAdjustmentData.EmbeddedSlimSidecarFileInfo.compressed'") even though adjustmentFormatIdentifier is not listed as a supported key. Are there other secret keys that you are aware of? Specifically I want to filter a fetch result for edited items. Something like this: NSPredicate(format: "hasAdjustments == true") (I tried this, doesn't work) The native Photos app has such a filter which leads me to believe that there probably is a key for this: If one of the Framework Developers reads this: Could you please update the documentation page with this information? Finally if there really aren't any more secret keys, is there a way to achieve this with adjustmentFormatIdentifier? I have tried a bunch of stuff already like adjustmentFormatIdentifier != nil but for some reason that gives me the exact opposite of what I want: all the photos without edits. 🫠 Any tips on the correct syntax here would be much appreciated.

AVCapturePhotoOutput crashes at delegate callback on MacOS 13.7.5
A functioning Multiplatform app, which includes use of Continuity Camera on an M1MacMini running Sequoia 15.5, works correctly capturing photos with AVCapturePhoto. However, that app (and a test app just for Continuity Camera) crashes at delegate callback when run on a 2017 MacBookPro under MacOS 13.7.5. The app was created with Xcode 16 (various releases) and using Swift 6 (but tried with 5). Compiling and running the test app with Xcode 15.2 on the 13.7.5 machine also crashes at delegate callback. The iPhone 15 Continuity Camera gets detected and set up correctly, and preview video works correctly. It's when the CapturePhoto code is run that the crash occurs. The relevant capture code is: func capturePhoto() { let captureSettings = AVCapturePhotoSettings() captureSettings.flashMode = .auto photoOutput.maxPhotoQualityPrioritization = .quality photoOutput.capturePhoto(with: captureSettings, delegate: PhotoDelegate.shared) print("**** CameraManager: capturePhoto") } and the delegate callbacks are: class PhotoDelegate: NSObject, AVCapturePhotoCaptureDelegate { nonisolated(unsafe) static let shared = PhotoDelegate() // MARK: - Delegate callbacks func photoOutput( _ output: AVCapturePhotoOutput, didFinishProcessingPhoto photo: AVCapturePhoto, error: (any Error)? ) { print("**** CameraManager: didFinishProcessingPhoto") guard let pData = photo.fileDataRepresentation() else { print("**** photoOutput is empty") return } print("**** photoOutput data is \(pData.count) bytes") } func photoOutput( _ output: AVCapturePhotoOutput, willBeginCaptureFor resolvedSettings: AVCaptureResolvedPhotoSettings ) { print("**** CameraManager: willBeginCaptureFor") } func photoOutput(_ output: AVCapturePhotoOutput, willCapturePhotoFor resolvedSettings: AVCaptureResolvedPhotoSettings) { print("**** CameraManager: willCaptureCapturePhotoFor") } } The crash report significant parts are..... Impact on iOS Due to Image Policy Changes with Android Target SDK 34
As the image access policy has changed with Android targeting SDK 34, I’m planning to update the way our app accesses photos. We are using the react-native-image-picker library to access images. On Android, the system no longer prompts the user for image access permissions, but on iOS, permission requests still appear. Since Android no longer requires explicit permissions, I’ve removed the permission request logic for Android. In this case, is it also safe to remove the permission request for iOS? In our app, photo access is only used for changing the user profile picture and attaching images when writing a post on the bulletin board. Are there any limitations or considerations for this kind of usage?

Thank you!

External camera support for iPhone
I am developing a video streaming app for iPhone. Minimum version is IOS 13. I want to connect an external USB camera to the iPhone app and stream from it. I have looked through a lot of information and have not found how to do this. Is it possible to do this? Is there any documentation on this?

Any thoughts on solving this situation would be appreciated. Regards, Michaela

Xcode Version 16.3 (16E140) App developed in Flutter Flutter 3.29.3 Test iPhone device: iPhone 16 Pro running iOS 18.5 I have an app that requires Camera access.
