Metal 4: When is it ok to dealloc a MTLBuffer's memory
I have something like this drawing in an MTKView (see at bottom). I am finding it difficult to figure out when can the Swift-land resources used in making the MTLBuffer(s) be released? Below, for example, is it ok if args goes out of scope (or is otherwise deallocated) at point 1, 2, or 3? Or perhaps even earlier, as soon as argsBuffer has been created? I have been reading through various articles such as Setting resource storage modes Choosing a resource storage mode for Apple GPUs Copying data to a private resource but it's a lot to absorb and I haven't been really able to find an authoritative description of the required lifetime of the resources in CPU land. I should mention that this is Metal 4 code. In previous versions of Metal, the MTLCommandBuffer had the ability to add a completion handler to be called by the GPU after it has finished running the commands in the buffer but in Metal 4 there is no such thing (it it were even needed for the purpose I am interested in). Any advice and/or pointers to the definitive literature will be appreciated. guard let argsBuffer = device.makeBuffer(bytes: &args,... argumentTable.setAddress(argsBuffer.gpuAddress, ... encoder.setArgumentTable(argumentTable, stages: .vertex) // encode drawing renderEncoder.draw... ... encoder.endEncoding() // 1 commandBuffer.endCommandBuffer() // 2 commandQueue.waitForDrawable(drawable) commandQueue.commit([commandBuffer]) // 3 commandQueue.signalDrawable(drawable) drawable.present()

ProjectiveTransformCameraComponent with custom matrix
I'm looking to create an effect on iOS that tracks the user's face position with ARKit and shifts nearer/more prominent geometry in the scene around while more "distant" geometry stays fixed to the XY plane - making it look like the geometry on screen "sticks out" I've managed to implement most of this successfully, but it's not perfect when using PerspectiveCameraComponent in RealityKit because as I shift the camera (and change its field of view based on the user's distance) the backplane changes its orientation (it's always orthogonal to camera's direction). I've tried adopting ProjectiveTransformCameraComponent instead. The idea is that the camera shifts around the scene, mirroring the user's head's position, looking at (0,0,0) and the back plane is adjusted to be parallel with the X,Y plane (animation replicated in Blender below). However, I can't manage to set up ProjectiveTransformCameraComponent with an appropriate matrix or update its transform property in a RealityKit System correctly. I also tried setting many simpler projection matrices as described in a number of guides on camera projection matrices on the internet and all I get is a blank view. Does anyone have some guidance on what the projection matrix that ProjectiveTransformCameraComponent expects is meant to look like or how I would go about accomplishing my goal?

MPSMatrixRandom SEGFAULTs when ran in an async context
The following minimal snippet SEGFAULTS with SDK 26.0 and 26.1. Won't crash if I remove async from the enclosing function signature - but it's impractical in a real project. import Metal import MetalPerformanceShaders let SEED = UInt64(0x0) typealias T = Float16 /* Why ran in async context? Because global GPU object, and async makeMTLFunction, and async makeMTLComputePipelineState. Nevertheless, can trigger the bug without using global @MainActor let myGPU = MyGPU() */ @main struct CMDLine { static func main() async { let ptr = UnsafeMutablePointer<T>.allocate(capacity: 0) async let future: Void = randomFillOnGPU(ptr, count: 0) print("Main thread is playing around") await future print("Successfully reached the end.") } static func randomFillOnGPU(_ buf: UnsafeMutablePointer<T>, count destbufcount: Int) async { // let (device, queue) = await (myGPU.device, myGPU.commandqueue) let myGPU = MyGPU() let (device, queue) = (myGPU.device, myGPU.commandqueue) // Init MTLBuffer, async let makeFunction, makeComputePipelineState, etc. let tempDataType = MPSDataType.uInt32 let randfiller = MPSMatrixRandomMTGP32(device: device, destinationDataType: tempDataType, seed: Int(bitPattern:UInt(SEED))) print("randomFillOnGPU: successfully created MPSMatrixRandom.") // try await computePipelineState // ^ Crashes before this could return // Or in this minimal case, after randomFillOnGPU() returns // make encoder, set pso, dispatch, commit... } } actor MyGPU { let device : MTLDevice let commandqueue : MTLCommandQueue init() { guard let dev: MTLDevice = MPSGetPreferredDevice(.skipRemovable), let cq = dev.makeCommandQueue(), dev.supportsFamily(.apple6) || dev.supportsFamily(.mac2) else { print("Unable to get Metal Device! Exiting"); exit(EX_UNAVAILABLE) } print("Selected device: \(String(format: "%llX", dev.registryID))") self.device = dev self.commandqueue = cq print("myGPU: initialization complete.") } } See FB20916929. Apparently objc autorelease pool is releasing the wrong address during context switch (across suspension points). I wonder why such obvious case has not been caught before.

How to customize shader code for visionos ?
Hello experts, I'm trying to implement a material with custom shader code, but I saw that visionOS doesn't allow you to inject custom Metal functions or use CustomMaterial like iOS/macOS, nor can you directly write Metal Shading Language (.metal) and use it through ShaderGraphMaterial. So my question is, if i want to implement your own shader code, how should i do it?

Multiple App Icons
Hi, I have an Unity game. I need to have multiple App Icons for my game for it to be able to be recognized in different countries. In other words, is it possible to have an iOS app in which the App Icon changes based on device locale/language? On Android this is possible using Unity Localization package "com.unity.localization"

GKAccessPoint triggerAccessPointWithState handler not invoked on iOS 26.0 and iOS 15.8.4
GKAccessPoint triggerAccessPointWithState handler not invoked on iOS 26.0 and iOS 15.8.4 Incorrect/Unexpected Behaviour: When calling [GKAccessPoint.shared triggerAccessPointWithState:GKGameCenterViewControllerStateAchievements handler:^{}] on a real device running iOS 26 beta (iOS 26), the overlay appears as expected, but the handler block is never called. This behavior also not working correctly on previous iOS versions(tested on iOS 15.8.4) Steps to Reproduce: Authenticate GKLocalPlayer Call triggerAccessPointWithState:handler: with a block that logs or performs logic Observe that overlay appears, but block is not executed Behavior: UI appears correctly Handler is not invoked at all Expected Result: The handler should fire immediately after the dashboard is shown. Actual Result: The handler is never called. Usecase: As GKGameCenterViewController is deprecated we are moving to GKAccesspoint but due to above functionality issue we are unable to. Environment: Device: iPhone 16, iPhone 7 iOS: 26.0 and iOS 15.8.4 Xcode: 26.0 beta and Xcode 16.4

Metal triangle strips uniform opacity.
I have this drawing app that I have been working on for the past few years when I have free time. I recently rebuilt the app in Metal to build out other brushes and improve performance, need to render 10000s of lines in realtime. I’m running into this issue trying to create a uniform opacity per path. I have a solution but do not love it - as this is a realtime app and the solution could have some bottlenecks. If I just generate a triangle strip from touch points and do my best to smooth, resample, and handle miters I will always get some overlaps. See: To create a uniform opacity I render to an offscreen texture with blending disabled. I then pre-multiply the color and draw that texture to a composite texture with blending on (I do this per path). This works but gets tricky when you introduce a textured brush, the edges of the texture in the frag shader cut out the line. Pasted Graphic 1.png Solution: I discard below a threshold fragment float4 fragment_line(VertexOut in [[stage_in]], texture2d<float> texture [[ texture(0) ]]) { constexpr sampler s(coord::normalized, address::mirrored_repeat, filter::linear); float2 texCoord = in.texCoord; float4 texColor = texture.sample(s, texCoord); if (texColor.a < 0.01) discard_fragment(); // may be slow (from what I read) return in.color * texColor; } Better but still not perfect. Question: I'm looking for better ways to create a uniform opacity per path. I tried .max blending but that will cause no blending of other paths. Any tips, ideas, much appreciated. If this is too detailed of a question just achieve.

RealityKit - Full 3D experience
I have a question I guess more for the Apple team. But why are there no totally 3D experiences for the Vision Pro lineup? I know they have given us tools to implement unity 3D games into iPhone and I guess you can also build it in RealityKit. But why at this moment are 3D games limited to just iPad and iPhone and can't you bring that into Vision Pro? Just to explain. When I say a totally 3D game, I mean games like Gorn. I mean the Vision Pro is definitely powerful enough, but it just feels limited to tabletop games and AR games. Is this something Apple is thinking about implementing?

Loosing display when zooming UIView on Mac (Designed for IPad) while IPad version works fine with same zoom level
I have a UIView that displays lines, and I zoom in (scale by 2 on the scroll view zoomScale variable containing the UIView). As I zoom in, on the Mac version (Designed for IPad) I loose the graphic after a certain number of zooms (the scrollView maximumZoomScale is set at 10). To ensure that lines are correctly represented, I modify the contentScaleFactor variable on the UIView; otherwise, the line's display is pixelated. On the IPad (simulator and real) I do not loose the graphic when zooming. So the Mac port of the UIView drawing is not working as the IPad version. Everything else of the application works fine except this important details. I already submitted a feedback request (#FB16829106) with the images showing the problem. I need a solution to this problem. Thanks.

RealityKit - How to change camera target in response of a touch event?
Hello, I’m porting my UIKit/SceneKit app to SwiftUI/RealityKit and I’m wondering how to change the camera target programmatically. I created a simple scene in Reality Composer Pro with two spheres. My goal is straightforward: when the user taps a sphere, the camera should look at it as the main target. Following Apple’s videos, I implemented the .gesture modifier and it is printing the tapped sphere correctly, but updating my targetEntity state doesn’t change anything, so the camera won't update its target. Is there a way to access the scene content at that level? Or what else should I do? Here’s my current code implementation: Thanks!

Swift game sometimes runs on efficiency cores then snaps back to performance cores
I've been working on Swift game which is not yet launched or available for preview. The game works in such a way that it has idle CPU while the user is thinking and sustained max CPU and GPU on as many cores as possible when he makes a move. Rarely, due to OS activity or something else outside of my control (for example when dropping the OS curtain even if for just a bit then remove it), the game or some of its threads are moved to efficiency cores which results in major stuttering which persists precisely until the game is idle again at which point the game is moved back on performance cores - but if the player keeps making moves the stuttering simply won't go away and so I guess compuptation is locked onto efficiency cores. The issue does not reproduce on MacCatalyst on Intel. How do I tell Swift to avoid efficiency cores? BTW Swift and SceneKIT have AMAZING performance especially when compared to others.

RealityKit fails with EXC_BAD_ACCESS at CMClockGetAnchorTime in the simulator
Starting with iOS 18.0 beta 1, I've noticed that RealityKit frequently crashes in the simulator when an app launches and presents an ARView. I was able to create a small sample app with repro steps that demonstrates the issue, and I've submitted feedback: FB16144085 I've included a crash log with the feedback. If possible, I'd appreciate it if an Apple engineer could investigate and suggest a workaround. It's awkward to be restricted to the iOS 17 simulator, which does not exhibit this behavior. Please let me know if there's anything I can do to help. Thank you.

Float8 and Float16 "Reserved_Name__Do_not_use"
I am developing a macOS terminal app, running on an M4 Pro, and using Metal. I am not able use float8 or float16, both reporting Variable has incomplete type 'float16' (aka '__Reserved_Name__Do_not_use_float16'). Based on the system I should be able to use these. Either it is because it is also compiling to Intel, which they are not allowed, or something else. Either way I have not been able to figure out how to get past this. IIs there a compiler setting I need to set to make this work? if so which one and what setting do I need? I only want to run this on M processes, on the latest version of OS so not interested in Intel version or backward compatibility.

unable to find boardcast extension
Issue Summary: In our Flutter application, we utilize Tencent's TRTC API for voice and video communication. While the broadcast functionality operates correctly on Android, it fails to respond on iOS devices. Attempting to initiate a broadcast results in no action, and long-pressing the broadcast button does not reveal the broadcast extension. Steps to Reproduce: Add Broadcast Upload Extension: In Xcode, navigate to File > New > Target. Select Broadcast Upload Extension and add it to the project. 2. Build the Project: Attempt to build the project. Encounter the error: "Cycle inside Runner; building could produce unreliable results." 3. Resolve Build Cycle Error: Go to the project’s Build Phases. Locate the Embed App Extensions phase. Move Embed App Extensions just below Copy Bundle Resources. Ensure the Copy only when installing option is selected. Rebuild the project; the cycle error is resolved. 4.Test Broadcast Functionality: Install the app on an iOS device. Tap the broadcast button; observe no response. Long-press the broadcast button in the top right hand scroll down menu; the broadcast extension is not listed. 5. Isolate the Issue: Create a new Flutter project. Repeat the above steps to add the broadcast upload extension. The issue persists: broadcast functionality remains unresponsive on iOS.

Metal and Swift Concurrency
Hi, Introducing Swift Concurrency to my Metal app has been a bit challenging as Swift Concurrency is limited by the cooperative thread pool. GPU work is obviously not CPU bound and can block forward moving progress, especially when using waitUntilCompleted on the command buffer. For concurrent render work this has the potential of under utilizing the CPU and even creating dead locks. My question is, what is the Metal's teams general recommendation when it comes to concurrency? It seems to me that Dispatch or OperationQueues are still the preferred way for Metal bound tasks in order to gain maximum performance? To integrate with Swift Concurrency my idea is to use continuations that kick off render jobs via Dispatch or Queues? Would this be the best solution to bridge async tasks with Metal work? Thanks!
