Cancel 'Share age range in app'
Hello I'm testing an 'age range sharing' feature using the AgeRangeService API in an app we service. I approved 'Age Sharing' during testing. (For your information, my account is an adult account.) For repeat testing, I would like to delete the our app from 'Apps that requested user age information' or cancel the sharing status. However, there doesn't seem to be such a feature. Is there a way I can't find, or is this a feature that Apple doesn't offer?

The total DMA size in DriverKit cannot exceed 2G?
We are developing a DriverKit driver on Apple M1. The process was successful when the number of frames was 15 or fewer. However, issues arose when allocating 16 frames: Error: PrepareForDMA failed! ret=0xe00002bd By calculating, I found that the total size of 16 video frames exceeds 2GB. Is there such a limitation in DriverKit that the total DMA size cannot exceed 2GB? Are there any methods that would allow me to bypass this restriction so I can use more video frame buffers?

How to sign a DEXT
Kevin's Guide to DEXT Signing The question of "How do I sign a DEXT" comes up a lot, so this post is my attempt to describe both what the issues are and the best current solutions are. So... The Problems: When DEXTs were originally introduced, the recommended development signing process required disabling SIP and local signing. There is a newer, much simpler process that's built on Xcode's integrated code-signing support; however, that newer process has not yet been integrated into the documentation library. In addition, while the older flow still works, many of the details it describes are no longer correct due to changes to Xcode and the developer portal. DriverKit's use of individually customized entitlements is different than the other entitlements on our platform, and Xcode's support for it is somewhat incomplete and buggy. The situation has improved considerably over time, particularly from Xcode 15 and Xcode 16, but there are still issues that are not fully resolved. To address #1, we introduced "development" entitlement variants of all DriverKit entitlements. These entitlement variants are ONLY available in development-signed builds, but they're available on all paid developer accounts without any special approval. They also allow a DEXT to match against any hardware, greatly simplifying working with development or prototype hardware which may not match the configuration of a final product. Unfortunately, this also means that DEXT developers will always have at least two entitlement variants (the public development variant and the "private" approved entitlement), which is what then causes the problem I mentioned in #2. The Automatic Solution: If you're using Xcode 16 or above, then Xcode's Automatic code sign support will work all DEXT Families, with the exception of distribution signing the PCI and USB Families. For completeness, here is how that Automatic flow should work: Change the code signing configuration to "Automatic". Add the capability using Xcode. (USB & PCI) Edit your Entitlement.plist to include the correct "Development Only" configuration: USB Development Only Configuration: <key>com.apple.developer.driverkit.transport.usb</key> <array> <dict> <key>idVendor</key> <string>*</string> </dict> </array> PCI Development Only Configuration: <key>com.apple.developer.driverkit.transport.pci</key> <array> <dict> <key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key> <string>0xFFFFFFFF&amp;0x00000000</string> </dict> </array> If you've been approved for one of these entitlements, the one oddity you'll see is that adding your approved capability will add both the approved AND the development variant, while deleting either will delete both. This is a visual side effect of #2 above; however, aside from the exception described below, it can be ignored. Similarly, you can sign distribution builds by creating a build archive and then exporting the build using the standard Xcode flow. Debugging Automatic Code-signing In a new project, the flow I describe above should just work; however, if you're converting an existing project, you may get code signing errors, generally complaining about how the provisioning profile configuration doesn't match. In most cases, this happens because Xcode is choosing to reuse a previously downloaded profile with an older configuration instead of generating a new configuration which would then include the configuration changes you made. Currently, you can find these profile files in: ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/UserData/Provisioning Profiles ...which can make it easier to find and delete the specific profile (if you choose). However, one recommendation I'd have here is to not treat the contents of that folder as "precious" or special. What automatic code signing actually does is generate provisioning profiles "on demand", so if you delete an automatic profile... Xcode will just generate it again at the next build. Manually generating profiles is more cumbersome, but the solution there is to preserve them as a separate resource, probably as part of your project data, NOT to just "lose" them in the folder here. If they get deleted from Xcode's store, then you can just copy them back in from your own store (or using Xcode, which can manually download profiles as well). The advantage of this approach is that when profiles "pile up" over time (which they tend to do), you can just delete[1] all of them then let Xcode regenerate the ones you're actually trying to investigate. In terms of looking at their contents, TN3125: Inside Code Signing: Provisioning Profiles has the details of how to see exactly what's there. CarPlay Stopped Working on Upgrade to iPhone 17 Pro + iOS 26
Have a 2019 Ford Edge w/ Sync 3.4, wired carplay. Worked fine w/ iPhone 16 Pro on iOS 18. Upgraded to iPhone 17 Pro, came w/ iOS 26, carplay hasn't worked since. I've kept trying throughout new iOS 26 releases, lately with iOS 26.3 Public Beta 1, still not working. Have a long running issue with updates and system diagnostics as I've tried over the last few months: FB20739050 There is also a Apple support community thread with issues like this (and a ton of others) - my first post there was https://discussions.apple.com/thread/256138283?answerId=261613103022&sortBy=oldest_first#261613103022 I'm hoping here in the developer forums someone can maybe take a look at the feedback item and various system diagnostics to pin-point the issue. Show / Hide HAL Virtual Audio Device Based on App State
I am developing a macOS virtual audio device using an Audio Server Plug-In (HAL). I want the virtual device to be visible to all applications only when my main app is running, and completely hidden from all apps when the app is closed. The goal is to dynamically control device visibility based on app state without reinstalling the driver.What is the recommended way for the app to notify the HAL plug-in about its running or closed state ? Any guidance on best-practice architecture for this scenario would be appreciated.

DriverKit USB: CreateInterfaceIterator returns empty on iPadOS for vendor-class device
I'm developing a DriverKit USB driver for iPadOS that needs to communicate with a vendor-class USB device (bInterfaceClass = 0xFF) as I need to communicate with a USB device using a custom protocol over IOUSBHostPipe for bulk transfers. Current Configuration: Info.plist: IOProviderClass = IOUSBHostDevice Device: bDeviceClass = 0, bInterfaceClass = 0xFF (vendor-specific) What Works: Driver matches and loads successfully Start_Impl() executes device->Open() succeeds device->SetConfiguration() succeeds The Problem: uintptr_t iterRef = 0; kern_return_t ret = device->CreateInterfaceIterator(&iterRef); Result: ret = kIOReturnSuccess (0x0), but iterRef = 0 (empty iterator) What I've Tried: Matching IOUSBHostInterface directly - Driver is loaded, but extension never executed Current approach (IOUSBHostDevice) - Driver extension loads and starts, but CreateInterfaceIterator returns empty Question: Does iPadOS allow third-party DriverKit extensions to access vendor-class (0xFF) USB devices? That is, iPadOS, is there a way for a third-party DriverKit extension to access IOUSBHostInterface objects for vendor-class (0xFF) USB devices?

macOS 26.4 Beta breaks keyboard remapping for built-in MacBook keyboards – significant ecosystem impact
Since macOS 26.4 Beta 1, virtual HID devices created via DriverKit can no longer intercept key events from the built-in MacBook keyboard. External keyboards still work. This is confirmed and tracked here: https://github.com/pqrs-org/Karabiner-Elements/issues/4402 One possible lead (from LLM-assisted analysis of Apple's open-source IOHIDFamily code and cross-referencing community reports): macOS 26.4 Beta may have introduced or modified a security policy referred to as com.apple.iohid.protectedDeviceAccess, which could block IOHIDDeviceOpen for the Apple Internal Keyboard connected via SPI transport (AppleHIDTransportHIDDevice). This appears related to a "GamePolicy" check in IOHIDDeviceClass.m that gates whether processes can open HID devices. This has not been independently verified and may or may not be the root cause. This has far-reaching consequences. Karabiner-Elements alone has over 21,000 GitHub stars and is used by hundreds of thousands of macOS users for keyboard customization, accessibility workflows, ergonomic setups, and multilingual input. This change completely breaks its core functionality on any MacBook. Beyond Karabiner, this affects every developer building keyboard remapping, input customization, or accessibility tooling via DriverKit virtual HID devices — including commercial applications currently in development. I'd argue that the power and flexibility of keyboard customization on macOS is a genuine competitive advantage for the platform. Developers and power users choose Macs partly because tools like this exist. Restricting this capability would be detrimental to the ecosystem and to Apple's appeal among professional users. I'd like to understand: is this an intentional security change or a regression? If intentional, is there a migration path?

DriverKit Entitlement Model Has No Viable Path for Open Source and Community-Maintained Drivers
While I welcome the arrival of a userspace implementation of drivers, DriverKit as it stands has some notable flaws. My main concern is the ability of open-source projects like HoRNDIS being able to access paid developer accounts and the limited entitlement scope (plus the waiting period) for what is essentially a hobbyist free project. Even if the developer is a professional company, some legacy hardware will go unsupported because of a lack of support from the vendor. Providing a way for users who need access to older hardware would be needed. Three concrete requests: A class-level or wildcard VID/PID entitlement for open source projects with a verifiable public repository A free or reduced-cost entitlement path for non-commercial volunteer-maintained drivers Published approval criteria and timelines so projects can plan accordingly Depreciating kexts without providing an accessible successor for community projects isn't security, it is gatekeeping access to hardware that is critically needed. Is this use case on the roadmap at all? Developers deserve a clear answer.

Dual Monitor Studio Display XDR fails on MacBook Pro M4 Pro
I have two Macbook Pros: 14" M4 Pro (company) 16" M4 Max (personal) I work remote full-time and recently purchased 2 of the new Studio Display XDRs. Everything works perfectly however I chose to connect them to the M4 Max. I have a caldigit Element TB5 hub and can daisy chain both monitors through that perfectly. With that said, no matter how I plug them into the M4 Pro I can only ever get one to light up at a time. What I have tried to resolve it: Plug them in individually to the m4 pro Plug them in one at a time, force them to 60hz and then plug them both in. Daisy Chaining the displays Daisy Chaining the displays through the TB5 Hub Nothing works. Only one display comes on and its whichever is plugged in first. I have even tried lowering the refresh to as low as it goes on both manually then plugging them back in. Still nothing. From what I am reading it appears to be that the M4 Pro has 3 display lanes and when I plug the first studio display XDR it is using 2 lanes. If I go down to 60hz which is what the original studio display was, then it should theoretically go down to 1 display lane allowing a second to be plugged in. A bunch of people had the older studio display running 2x 5k ASD monitors on the M4 Pro. Now with the latest Studio Display XDR I am stuck. I was researching possibly editing the EDID of each to mimic the older studio display, but I don't know how to do that easily without BetterDisplay and right now I have no ability to install that. There is a chance I can get approval to run commands / BetterDisplay to get this working if a solution can be found. What I think the ultimate fix is for the firmware / macOS to realize the limitation, force the studio display XDR to 60hz when a second monitor is plugged in and they both would work. A single Studio Display XDR could run 120hz, but immediately upon plugging a second one it swaps to 60hz. I am completely fine with that scenario. I opened a ticket with support. Case # 102853480566, but it went no where. I got disconnected during the first call after describing everything and when they reached back out they didn't even give me 2 seconds to pick up and they hung up and closed the ticket. I really don't want to return the displays because they are beautiful and work beautifully on the m4 max. They should work with 60hz on the m4 pro. Who / How / When can we get this resolved? I would be happy to work with an Apple dev / engineer to help resolve this.

Peripheral Devices control on macOS
We are looking for a solution (API, Frameworks) that would allow us to block any type of external device, including storage devices, HIDs, network adapters, and Bluetooth devices according with dynamic rules that comes from management server . This feature is important for endpoint security solutions vendors, and it can be implemented on other platforms and older versions of macOS using the IOKit framework and kexts. I have found one solution that can control the usage only of "storage" devices with the EndpointSecurity framework in conjunction with the DiskArbitration framework. This involves monitoring the MOUNT and OPEN events for /dev/disk files, checking for devices as they appear, and ejecting them if they need to be blocked.. Also, I have found the ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_IOKIT_OPEN event in EndpointSecurity.framework, but it doesn't seem to be useful, at least not for my purposes, because ES doesn't provide AUTH events for some system daemons, such as configd (it only provides NOTIFY events). Furthermore, there are other ways to communicate with devices and their drivers apart from IOKit. DriverKit.framework does not provide the necessary functionality either, as it requires specific entitlements that are only available to certain vendors and devices. Therefore, it cannot be used to create universal drivers for all devices, which should be blocked. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

DriverKit - IOUSBHostDevice::SetProperties
I am trying to add a few properties to an IOUSBHostDevice but the SetProperties is returning kIOReturnUnsupported. The reason I am trying to modify the IOUSBHostDevice's properties is so we can support a MacBook Air SuperDrive when it is attached to our docking station devices. The MacBook Air SuperDrive needs a high powered port to run and this driver will help the OS realize that our dock can support it. I see that the documentation for SetProperties says: The default implementation of this method returns kIOReturnUnsupported. You can override this method and use it to modify the set of properties and values as needed. The changes you make apply only to the current service. Do I need to override IOUSBHostDevice? AirPods Max USB-C Lossless mode not working on any device (iOS 18.5 beta + macOS 15.5 Beta)
I’m experiencing a persistent issue with the new USB-C lossless audio feature on AirPods Max (firmware 7E101). I’m using original Apple USB-C to USB-C cable and have tested this setup across multiple Apple devices, including: • iPhone (running iOS 18.5 beta) • iPad Pro with USB-C • MacBook Pro (15.5 Beta) ❗️Problem: Despite Apple’s announcement that AirPods Max now support wired lossless audio over USB-C, I’m unable to get any audio output via USB-C on any device. • On iPhone: I disabled Bluetooth, connected via USB-C — no sound. • On MacBook: The device is shown as “AirPods Max USB Audio” in System Information > USB, but it does not appear in Sound settings or Audio MIDI Setup as an available output. • On iPad Pro: Same behavior — no audio output. Other details: • I performed a factory reset of the headphones, but the LED flashes red instead of the expected amber → white sequence. (Apple’s documentation does not mention red flash behavior during reset — might indicate an error state.) • The issue is not isolated to the iOS 18.5 beta — since the same behavior occurs on macOS and iPadOS. What works: • Bluetooth audio still works fine. • The cable and USB-C ports function with other audio devices. ⸻ Summary: It looks like: • USB audio is being detected on a hardware level (at least on Mac), • but software support for output (especially on macOS/iPadOS) is either not implemented, disabled, or bugged — possibly connected to iOS 18.5 beta or broader OS-level limitations.

Multiple thunderbolt device connected by daisy chain.
Hello everyone. I have been developing PCIe device driver through Thunderbolt. However, it was confirmed that up to three devices connected to the daisy chain worked normally, but the fourth device failed to operate the _CopyDeviceMemoryWithIndex() function for connection with the BAR0 App and did not work properly. The standard specification of Thunderbolt 3/4 is said to be supported by daisy chain connection up to 6-device, but in reality, it is only 3 units, so I ask the forum for technical confirmation. Of course total 4 device by 2-port x 2-device daisy chain connecting has working well. The PCI entry in System information indicates that all devices have normal load of the PCIe device driver. Thank you.

How to Reliably Detect DriverKit Support on iPad Devices
We’re looking for a reliable way to determine whether an iPad device supports DriverKit. Since there doesn't appear to be a direct public API for this, our current approach is as follows: Retrieve the device’s model identifier (e.g., "iPad14,8") and the iOS/iPadOS version. Map the model identifier to a known iPad model and its associated chip. If the device has an M-series chip, we assume it supports DriverKit. For future-proofing, we plan to assume that any future iPad with a model identifier of iPad15,* or higher will contain an M-series chip and therefore support DriverKit. We have a couple of questions: Is there a more reliable or official API to determine the chip version or DriverKit support? Is it reasonable to rely on the assumptions outlined in steps 2 and 3 for determining DriverKit compatibility?

Symbol missing when running Dext builded with Xcode 16.2 and running on macOS 14.7.4

But when attempting to plug on Device on macOS 14.7.4 it crashes immediately with what appears to be a missing Foundation symbol. CarPlay Support
Hi All, We've been working on a new CarPlay-supported App and are hoping for advice on how to achieve this. We have completed the CarPlay Entitledment Request, but have not received any response from Apple. Given we're close to launch on Android, we'd love to have these projects completed together. Any advice on how to make contact with the approvals team, or suggestions on how long this will normally take? If they're no longer taking applications or rejection is high, any guidance would be greatly appreciated too!

DriverKit assertion in OSAction::Cancel() for timer handler
I have a dext that creates a periodic timer on its own dispatch queue. The callback is declared as follows: virtual void HandleTimer( OSAction *action, uint64_t time ) TYPE(IOTimerDispatchSource::TimerOccurred); The timer is allocated as follows: CreateActionHandleTimer( size, &ivars->TimerHandler ); IODispatchQueue::Create( "TimerQueue", 0, 0, &ivars->TimerDispatchQueue ); IOTimerDispatchSource::Create( ivars->TimerDispatchQueue, &ivars->TimerDispatchSrc ); I can start up the timer and it works just fine. However, in my Stop() method, when trying to shut the timer down, I get an assertion in OSAction::Cancel() for TimerHandler: Assertion failed: (queue), function Cancel, file uioserver.cpp, line 4401. What does this assertion indicate or is the source code available? If so, where? I'm using macOS 15.5. Note I am attempting to cancel the handler after the dispatch source and queue are canceled and the cleanup methods have been called (which is working). But, cancelling TimerHandler first also asserts.

Cancel 'Share age range in app'
Hello I'm testing an 'age range sharing' feature using the AgeRangeService API in an app we service. I approved 'Age Sharing' during testing. (For your information, my account is an adult account.) For repeat testing, I would like to delete the our app from 'Apps that requested user age information' or cancel the sharing status. However, there doesn't seem to be such a feature. Is there a way I can't find, or is this a feature that Apple doesn't offer?

The total DMA size in DriverKit cannot exceed 2G?

The process was successful when the number of frames was 15 or fewer. However, issues arose when allocating 16 frames: Error: PrepareForDMA failed! ret=0xe00002bd By calculating, I found that the total size of 16 video frames exceeds 2GB. Is there such a limitation in DriverKit that the total DMA size cannot exceed 2GB? Are there any methods that would allow me to bypass this restriction so I can use more video frame buffers?

How to sign a DEXT
Kevin's Guide to DEXT Signing The question of "How do I sign a DEXT" comes up a lot, so this post is my attempt to describe both what the issues are and the best current solutions are. So... The Problems: When DEXTs were originally introduced, the recommended development signing process required disabling SIP and local signing. There is a newer, much simpler process that's built on Xcode's integrated code-signing support; however, that newer process has not yet been integrated into the documentation library. In addition, while the older flow still works, many of the details it describes are no longer correct due to changes to Xcode and the developer portal. DriverKit's use of individually customized entitlements is different than the other entitlements on our platform, and Xcode's support for it is somewhat incomplete and buggy. The situation has improved considerably over time, particularly from Xcode 15 and Xcode 16, but there are still issues that are not fully resolved. To address #1, we introduced "development" entitlement variants of all DriverKit entitlements. These entitlement variants are ONLY available in development-signed builds, but they're available on all paid developer accounts without any special approval. They also allow a DEXT to match against any hardware, greatly simplifying working with development or prototype hardware which may not match the configuration of a final product. Unfortunately, this also means that DEXT developers will always have at least two entitlement variants (the public development variant and the "private" approved entitlement), which is what then causes the problem I mentioned in #2. The Automatic Solution: If you're using Xcode 16 or above, then Xcode's Automatic code sign support will work all DEXT Families, with the exception of distribution signing the PCI and USB Families. For completeness, here is how that Automatic flow should work: Change the code signing configuration to "Automatic". Add the capability using Xcode. (USB & PCI) Edit your Entitlement.plist to include the correct "Development Only" configuration: USB Development Only Configuration: <key>com.apple.developer.driverkit.transport.usb</key> <array> <dict> <key>idVendor</key> <string>*</string> </dict> </array> PCI Development Only Configuration: <key>com.apple.developer.driverkit.transport.pci</key> <array> <dict> <key>IOPCIPrimaryMatch</key> <string>0xFFFFFFFF&amp;0x00000000</string> </dict> </array> If you've been approved for one of these entitlements, the one oddity you'll see is that adding your approved capability will add both the approved AND the development variant, while deleting either will delete both. This is a visual side effect of #2 above; however, aside from the exception described below, it can be ignored. Similarly, you can sign distribution builds by creating a build archive and then exporting the build using the standard Xcode flow. Debugging Automatic Code-signing In a new project, the flow I describe above should just work; however, if you're converting an existing project, you may get code signing errors, generally complaining about how the provisioning profile configuration doesn't match. In most cases, this happens because Xcode is choosing to reuse a previously downloaded profile with an older configuration instead of generating a new configuration which would then include the configuration changes you made. Currently, you can find these profile files in: ~/Library/Developer/Xcode/UserData/Provisioning Profiles ...which can make it easier to find and delete the specific profile (if you choose). However, one recommendation I'd have here is to not treat the contents of that folder as "precious" or special. What automatic code signing actually does is generate provisioning profiles "on demand", so if you delete an automatic profile... Xcode will just generate it again at the next build. Manually generating profiles is more cumbersome, but the solution there is to preserve them as a separate resource, probably as part of your project data, NOT to just "lose" them in the folder here. If they get deleted from Xcode's store, then you can just copy them back in from your own store (or using Xcode, which can manually download profiles as well). The advantage of this approach is that when profiles "pile up" over time (which they tend to do), you can just delete[1] all of them then let Xcode regenerate the ones you're actually trying to investigate. In terms of looking at their contents, TN3125: Inside Code Signing: Provisioning Profiles has the details of how to see exactly what's there. CarPlay Stopped Working on Upgrade to iPhone 17 Pro + iOS 26
Have a 2019 Ford Edge w/ Sync 3.4, wired carplay. Worked fine w/ iPhone 16 Pro on iOS 18. Upgraded to iPhone 17 Pro, came w/ iOS 26, carplay hasn't worked since. I've kept trying throughout new iOS 26 releases, lately with iOS 26.3 Public Beta 1, still not working. Have a long running issue with updates and system diagnostics as I've tried over the last few months: FB20739050 There is also a Apple support community thread with issues like this (and a ton of others) - my first post there was https://discussions.apple.com/thread/256138283?answerId=261613103022&sortBy=oldest_first#261613103022 I'm hoping here in the developer forums someone can maybe take a look at the feedback item and various system diagnostics to pin-point the issue. Show / Hide HAL Virtual Audio Device Based on App State
I am developing a macOS virtual audio device using an Audio Server Plug-In (HAL). I want the virtual device to be visible to all applications only when my main app is running, and completely hidden from all apps when the app is closed. The goal is to dynamically control device visibility based on app state without reinstalling the driver.What is the recommended way for the app to notify the HAL plug-in about its running or closed state ? Any guidance on best-practice architecture for this scenario would be appreciated.

DriverKit USB: CreateInterfaceIterator returns empty on iPadOS for vendor-class device
I'm developing a DriverKit USB driver for iPadOS that needs to communicate with a vendor-class USB device (bInterfaceClass = 0xFF) as I need to communicate with a USB device using a custom protocol over IOUSBHostPipe for bulk transfers. Current Configuration: Info.plist: IOProviderClass = IOUSBHostDevice Device: bDeviceClass = 0, bInterfaceClass = 0xFF (vendor-specific) What Works: Driver matches and loads successfully Start_Impl() executes device->Open() succeeds device->SetConfiguration() succeeds The Problem: uintptr_t iterRef = 0; kern_return_t ret = device->CreateInterfaceIterator(&iterRef); Result: ret = kIOReturnSuccess (0x0), but iterRef = 0 (empty iterator) What I've Tried: Matching IOUSBHostInterface directly - Driver is loaded, but extension never executed Current approach (IOUSBHostDevice) - Driver extension loads and starts, but CreateInterfaceIterator returns empty Question: Does iPadOS allow third-party DriverKit extensions to access vendor-class (0xFF) USB devices? That is, iPadOS, is there a way for a third-party DriverKit extension to access IOUSBHostInterface objects for vendor-class (0xFF) USB devices?

macOS 26.4 Beta breaks keyboard remapping for built-in MacBook keyboards – significant ecosystem impact
Since macOS 26.4 Beta 1, virtual HID devices created via DriverKit can no longer intercept key events from the built-in MacBook keyboard. External keyboards still work. This is confirmed and tracked here: https://github.com/pqrs-org/Karabiner-Elements/issues/4402 One possible lead (from LLM-assisted analysis of Apple's open-source IOHIDFamily code and cross-referencing community reports): macOS 26.4 Beta may have introduced or modified a security policy referred to as com.apple.iohid.protectedDeviceAccess, which could block IOHIDDeviceOpen for the Apple Internal Keyboard connected via SPI transport (AppleHIDTransportHIDDevice). This appears related to a "GamePolicy" check in IOHIDDeviceClass.m that gates whether processes can open HID devices. This has not been independently verified and may or may not be the root cause. This has far-reaching consequences. Karabiner-Elements alone has over 21,000 GitHub stars and is used by hundreds of thousands of macOS users for keyboard customization, accessibility workflows, ergonomic setups, and multilingual input. This change completely breaks its core functionality on any MacBook. Beyond Karabiner, this affects every developer building keyboard remapping, input customization, or accessibility tooling via DriverKit virtual HID devices — including commercial applications currently in development. I'd argue that the power and flexibility of keyboard customization on macOS is a genuine competitive advantage for the platform. Developers and power users choose Macs partly because tools like this exist. Restricting this capability would be detrimental to the ecosystem and to Apple's appeal among professional users. I'd like to understand: is this an intentional security change or a regression? If intentional, is there a migration path?

DriverKit Entitlement Model Has No Viable Path for Open Source and Community-Maintained Drivers
While I welcome the arrival of a userspace implementation of drivers, DriverKit as it stands has some notable flaws. My main concern is the ability of open-source projects like HoRNDIS being able to access paid developer accounts and the limited entitlement scope (plus the waiting period) for what is essentially a hobbyist free project. Even if the developer is a professional company, some legacy hardware will go unsupported because of a lack of support from the vendor. Providing a way for users who need access to older hardware would be needed. Three concrete requests: A class-level or wildcard VID/PID entitlement for open source projects with a verifiable public repository A free or reduced-cost entitlement path for non-commercial volunteer-maintained drivers Published approval criteria and timelines so projects can plan accordingly Depreciating kexts without providing an accessible successor for community projects isn't security, it is gatekeeping access to hardware that is critically needed. Is this use case on the roadmap at all? Developers deserve a clear answer.

Dual Monitor Studio Display XDR fails on MacBook Pro M4 Pro
I have two Macbook Pros: 14" M4 Pro (company) 16" M4 Max (personal) I work remote full-time and recently purchased 2 of the new Studio Display XDRs. Everything works perfectly however I chose to connect them to the M4 Max. I have a caldigit Element TB5 hub and can daisy chain both monitors through that perfectly. With that said, no matter how I plug them into the M4 Pro I can only ever get one to light up at a time. What I have tried to resolve it: Plug them in individually to the m4 pro Plug them in one at a time, force them to 60hz and then plug them both in. Daisy Chaining the displays Daisy Chaining the displays through the TB5 Hub Nothing works. Only one display comes on and its whichever is plugged in first. I have even tried lowering the refresh to as low as it goes on both manually then plugging them back in. Still nothing. From what I am reading it appears to be that the M4 Pro has 3 display lanes and when I plug the first studio display XDR it is using 2 lanes. If I go down to 60hz which is what the original studio display was, then it should theoretically go down to 1 display lane allowing a second to be plugged in. A bunch of people had the older studio display running 2x 5k ASD monitors on the M4 Pro. Now with the latest Studio Display XDR I am stuck. I was researching possibly editing the EDID of each to mimic the older studio display, but I don't know how to do that easily without BetterDisplay and right now I have no ability to install that. There is a chance I can get approval to run commands / BetterDisplay to get this working if a solution can be found. What I think the ultimate fix is for the firmware / macOS to realize the limitation, force the studio display XDR to 60hz when a second monitor is plugged in and they both would work. A single Studio Display XDR could run 120hz, but immediately upon plugging a second one it swaps to 60hz. I am completely fine with that scenario. I opened a ticket with support. Case # 102853480566, but it went no where. I got disconnected during the first call after describing everything and when they reached back out they didn't even give me 2 seconds to pick up and they hung up and closed the ticket. I really don't want to return the displays because they are beautiful and work beautifully on the m4 max. They should work with 60hz on the m4 pro. Who / How / When can we get this resolved? I would be happy to work with an Apple dev / engineer to help resolve this.

Peripheral Devices control on macOS
We are looking for a solution (API, Frameworks) that would allow us to block any type of external device, including storage devices, HIDs, network adapters, and Bluetooth devices according with dynamic rules that comes from management server . This feature is important for endpoint security solutions vendors, and it can be implemented on other platforms and older versions of macOS using the IOKit framework and kexts. I have found one solution that can control the usage only of "storage" devices with the EndpointSecurity framework in conjunction with the DiskArbitration framework. This involves monitoring the MOUNT and OPEN events for /dev/disk files, checking for devices as they appear, and ejecting them if they need to be blocked.. Also, I have found the ES_EVENT_TYPE_AUTH_IOKIT_OPEN event in EndpointSecurity.framework, but it doesn't seem to be useful, at least not for my purposes, because ES doesn't provide AUTH events for some system daemons, such as configd (it only provides NOTIFY events). Furthermore, there are other ways to communicate with devices and their drivers apart from IOKit. DriverKit.framework does not provide the necessary functionality either, as it requires specific entitlements that are only available to certain vendors and devices. Therefore, it cannot be used to create universal drivers for all devices, which should be blocked. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

DriverKit - IOUSBHostDevice::SetProperties
I am trying to add a few properties to an IOUSBHostDevice but the SetProperties is returning kIOReturnUnsupported. The reason I am trying to modify the IOUSBHostDevice's properties is so we can support a MacBook Air SuperDrive when it is attached to our docking station devices. The MacBook Air SuperDrive needs a high powered port to run and this driver will help the OS realize that our dock can support it. I see that the documentation for SetProperties says: The default implementation of this method returns kIOReturnUnsupported. You can override this method and use it to modify the set of properties and values as needed. The changes you make apply only to the current service. Do I need to override IOUSBHostDevice? AirPods Max USB-C Lossless mode not working on any device (iOS 18.5 beta + macOS 15.5 Beta)
I’m experiencing a persistent issue with the new USB-C lossless audio feature on AirPods Max (firmware 7E101). I’m using original Apple USB-C to USB-C cable and have tested this setup across multiple Apple devices, including: • iPhone (running iOS 18.5 beta) • iPad Pro with USB-C • MacBook Pro (15.5 Beta) ❗️Problem: Despite Apple’s announcement that AirPods Max now support wired lossless audio over USB-C, I’m unable to get any audio output via USB-C on any device. • On iPhone: I disabled Bluetooth, connected via USB-C — no sound. • On MacBook: The device is shown as “AirPods Max USB Audio” in System Information > USB, but it does not appear in Sound settings or Audio MIDI Setup as an available output. • On iPad Pro: Same behavior — no audio output. Other details: • I performed a factory reset of the headphones, but the LED flashes red instead of the expected amber → white sequence. (Apple’s documentation does not mention red flash behavior during reset — might indicate an error state.) • The issue is not isolated to the iOS 18.5 beta — since the same behavior occurs on macOS and iPadOS. What works: • Bluetooth audio still works fine. • The cable and USB-C ports function with other audio devices. ⸻ Summary: It looks like: • USB audio is being detected on a hardware level (at least on Mac), • but software support for output (especially on macOS/iPadOS) is either not implemented, disabled, or bugged — possibly connected to iOS 18.5 beta or broader OS-level limitations.

Multiple thunderbolt device connected by daisy chain.
Hello everyone. I have been developing PCIe device driver through Thunderbolt. However, it was confirmed that up to three devices connected to the daisy chain worked normally, but the fourth device failed to operate the _CopyDeviceMemoryWithIndex() function for connection with the BAR0 App and did not work properly. The standard specification of Thunderbolt 3/4 is said to be supported by daisy chain connection up to 6-device, but in reality, it is only 3 units, so I ask the forum for technical confirmation. Of course total 4 device by 2-port x 2-device daisy chain connecting has working well. The PCI entry in System information indicates that all devices have normal load of the PCIe device driver. How to Reliably Detect DriverKit Support on iPad Devices
We’re looking for a reliable way to determine whether an iPad device supports DriverKit. Since there doesn't appear to be a direct public API for this, our current approach is as follows: Retrieve the device’s model identifier (e.g., "iPad14,8") and the iOS/iPadOS version. Map the model identifier to a known iPad model and its associated chip. If the device has an M-series chip, we assume it supports DriverKit. For future-proofing, we plan to assume that any future iPad with a model identifier of iPad15,* or higher will contain an M-series chip and therefore support DriverKit. We have a couple of questions: Is there a more reliable or official API to determine the chip version or DriverKit support? Is it reasonable to rely on the assumptions outlined in steps 2 and 3 for determining DriverKit compatibility?

CarPlay Support
Hi All, We've been working on a new CarPlay-supported App and are hoping for advice on how to achieve this. We have completed the CarPlay Entitledment Request, but have not received any response from Apple. Given we're close to launch on Android, we'd love to have these projects completed together. Any advice on how to make contact with the approvals team, or suggestions on how long this will normally take? If they're no longer taking applications or rejection is high, any guidance would be greatly appreciated too!

DriverKit assertion in OSAction::Cancel() for timer handler
I have a dext that creates a periodic timer on its own dispatch queue. The callback is declared as follows: virtual void HandleTimer( OSAction *action, uint64_t time ) TYPE(IOTimerDispatchSource::TimerOccurred); The timer is allocated as follows: CreateActionHandleTimer( size, &ivars->TimerHandler ); IODispatchQueue::Create( "TimerQueue", 0, 0, &ivars->TimerDispatchQueue ); IOTimerDispatchSource::Create( ivars->TimerDispatchQueue, &ivars->TimerDispatchSrc ); I can start up the timer and it works just fine. However, in my Stop() method, when trying to shut the timer down, I get an assertion in OSAction::Cancel() for TimerHandler: Assertion failed: (queue), function Cancel, file uioserver.cpp, line 4401. What does this assertion indicate or is the source code available? If so, where? I'm using macOS 15.5. Note I am attempting to cancel the handler after the dispatch source and queue are canceled and the cleanup methods have been called (which is working). But, cancelling TimerHandler first also asserts.
